Saga’s End

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” did not really live up to the hype. This isn’t to say that it is a bad film, quite the contrary. A fun little space romp with a few twists, a couple cameos, and some nice special effects but, as with the previous two entries in this trilogy, felt very much like the original trilogy right down to a few choice words of dialogue. The First Order is out conquering, or destroying all those who oppose them, an old enemy returns, Kylo Ren pursues Rey, and Rey completes her Jedi training and of course finds out who she really is. I really, really wanted to love this movie and trilogy on the whole but I felt as if I was watching someone’s version of the original trilogy (which I do love) but with new characters in place of the old. And the characters, I really just couldn’t bring myself to care for most of them. In a well told story one should care about the journey of the main character(s) and the villains should be equally as compelling. To me, Kylo Ren totally lacked any sort of personality. Still puzzled as to how he managed to come into possession of Darth Vader’s mask. Finn feels like he was just slapped into the story for the hell of it. Chewbacca felt like he was there to appease long time fans. Many inconsistencies yet still fun to watch. 7 out of 10.
