Finally got around to seeing “War for the Planet of the Apes”. While not as good as the first two installments of the current rebooting, it is still an enjoyable adventure. Caesar and his group of apes just want to be left alone in the woods to live in peace, but of course many humans fearing extinction want to wipe them out. Try as the apes might to avoid confrontation, humans attack and set off a chain reaction that finally gets us to the climax of the story. Patience is needed though as some parts do get a bit slow, they could have actually gotten away with keeping it to two hours. You really do need to see the first two movies to understand this one though, which is as it should be in a series of movies.
The action sequences are well done, most of the cgi is unnoticeable, a few nods to the original Planet of the Apes series of movies, and Andy Serkis does a great job in bringing out Caesar’s internal conflicts with very little words. The main bad guy though comes across as more of a jerk than a military leader. A lot of character study going on in this film on both sides. Not an Oscar winning masterpiece but enjoyable nonetheless. I give 7.5 out of 10. If you’re a fan of the franchise, definitely give it a watch.
