What Good Does That Do?

Whenever something tragic happens, I see people on news article comment boards or on social media state that their thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Not to be mean or anything nor am I questioning someone elses beliefs, but what do thoughts and prayers actually accomplish? People are still getting murdered. People still lose their homes or even die in natural disasters. People still must flee their homes or risk death in war torn countries. Loved ones of victims of violence or disasters still lose that person and must grieve. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. I have not seen any proof of thoughts and prayers doing anything to help. Sounds a bit Sherlock I know, but actions would speak so much louder.
