Random Observation

Today I came across an article about food origins. Basically, it pointed out that a lot of dishes you think are from a certain country are actually in fact from somewhere else and how the ideas came about. Was a bit interesting as a little time waster article. None of which was a big deal to me, I’d still enjoy the dishes no matter where they came from. Gyros are actually from the Middle East, spaghetti & meatballs is not Italian but Italian-American, and you’ll not find any fortune cookies in China, etc. that sort of thing. What struck me as odd though were an item or two that actually has a country attached to the food’s name. Why would one call French toast French toast if it didn’t come from France. Same with French fries. French fries, according to the article, were actually invented in Belgium. Shouldn’t they be called Belgian fries then?
