Question of Good and Evil

Who do you think dictates what is good and what is evil?

by: Anonymous

Good question anon. Personally I do not subscribe to any particular deity or religion so I will spare you an umbrella answer. No disrespect to those who are religious of course, but I never did like umbrella answers. I think Benedict Cumberbatch said it best in one of the interviews he did last year when he said, “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” Wise man that Mr. Cumberbatch. Good and evil are all a matter of perspective and in a social group (nationally, politically, religiously, etc.), the majority decides which they wish to deem good and not good. Some groups honestly believe that their way is the proper way and everyone else is wrong, which is how a lot of wars get started. Humans, as far as we know, are the only species on Earth who have concepts of good and evil. I suppose these concepts help social groups to survive. Concepts of what is good or evil can change many times to fit a society’s needs or desires. The history books are rife with examples of such.

Hope this answered your question, I know it’s a bit long winded. These are of course my opinions, there are many out there.

“One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.” Check out Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. That’s the first place I read that. It probably goes way back. The British thought the American rebels were terrorists in the 1770’s because they hid behind trees to shoot, ran away and didn’t surrender, and hid among the noncombatant populace by day. Sound like a familiar way of fighting? And there were people who resisted the Romans by the same tactics. I believe that there’s a benchmark for good vs. evil that transcends a lot of cultures & religions, though: first, do no harm. As far as who dictates? The winners write history.
