Found this quote on the blog page of another fan and is originally from Glamour Magazine in the UK:
“I’m still very sensitive and wary of people recognising me… The only thing that really annoys me is people trying to surreptitiously take a photo on their phone without asking. I feel it’s cowardly and a bit pathetic. Just ask me if you really want me to have a photograph with you.” — Benedict Cumberbatch talking about people taking sneaky photos.
People often forget that celebrities are still people. They don’t stop to think how it would feel if they had every move of theirs scrutinized, a camera in their faces when they are trying to enjoy some alone time, or just rudely taking pictures without asking period. It is one thing to be snapping pictures like crazy if the celebrity is doing a public appearance as part of their job, it is a totally different thing if said celebrity is taking in a show at the local theatre, enjoying a meal at a restaurant, or doing something as mundane as grocery shopping. Actors should not have to “be on” all the time. Another reason why many shy away from their fans. They are not animals at a petting zoo, they are regular people who do a job that just happens to involve being seen by many. They deserve a bit of respect and privacy just as you would expect people to give to you. And secretly snapping pictures is indeed cowardly and quite rude and is even more rude to go about plastering those sneaky pics all over the internet.
